It has been just over a year since the first emergency declaration was issued by Governor Abbott in response to the COVID pandemic. This past year has been tough for all of us in the Big Bend. We have all been affected in one way or another.

The good news is that as vaccines roll out across the state and region, we can all take a sigh of relief that the vaccines will provide meaningful protection against the virus, and life will slowly return to normal. The approval of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine will help ensure an adequate supply of vaccines for all who want one. If you have not received your vaccine yet, be patient, more are on the way.

Big Bend Regional Hospital District has provided medical care for low-income Brewster and Presidio county residents since its formation in 1991. Due to the remoteness and ruggedness of the region, accessing health care can be challenging. The District is committed to improve access to healthcare and healthcare infrastructure for the benefit of all county residents through its programming and funding initiatives.

It is estimated that 40% of adults in the U.S. have postponed preventive medical treatment throughout the last year due to lockdowns or fears of contracting COVID. Preventative and routine healthcare helps to manage chronic conditions, and will detect new conditions – it can save your life.

The District has recently partnered with Desert Imaging to bring back its mobile mammography truck to the region making it more convenient for preventative mammograms. The demand for this service was overwhelming! During its March visit, over 140 screenings were performed in Marfa, Alpine, and Presidio. If you were not able to be screened, the mobile mammography truck will be back in June and September. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 915-577-0100.

We have also launched a pilot program to provide diabetes management education classes, providing much needed knowledge to combat the impacts of diabetes on our communities. I urge you make that doctor appointment you have been putting off. There is no reason to wait any longer.

Finally, the District is focused on outreach and recruitment of residents eligible for our programs. If you know of a neighbor, family member, or friend that needs medical help, please have them call us. We have recently increased the income limit to qualify for our programs, making it easier for people to become eligible. This is significant because so many people have lost their jobs during the pandemic, and their livelihoods have suffered.

The District has offices in both Alpine and Presidio, and routinely visits surrounding communities to assist in completing applications for assistance. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us in confidence - we are ready to help.
